What is Pharmacy First?

Pharmacy First is a free NHS Scotland service that provides consultations with pharmacists for common conditions without requiring a GP appointment. This service is designed to make healthcare more accessible and reduce pressure on GP practices and emergency departments.

At PeakHealth Pharmacy, our trained pharmacists can provide advice, treatment, and if necessary, prescribe medication for a range of minor health concerns. All consultations take place in a private consultation room to ensure your privacy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a charge for Pharmacy First services?

No, Pharmacy First is a free NHS service. If you're eligible for free prescriptions, any medications provided will also be free.

Do I need to make an appointment?

For standard Pharmacy First services, no appointment is necessary, though you may have to wait if our pharmacist is with another patient. For Pharmacy First Plus services with Harvie, we recommend booking in advance to guarantee availability, especially for more complex conditions.

What's the difference between Pharmacy First and Pharmacy First Plus?

Pharmacy First covers common minor ailments and is available with any of our pharmacists. Pharmacy First Plus is an enhanced service available only with Harvie, our prescribing pharmacist, who can diagnose and prescribe for a wider range of conditions that would normally require a GP visit.

What if my condition isn't suitable for Pharmacy First?

If your condition is beyond the scope of pharmacy care, our pharmacists will advise you to speak to your GP or, if necessary, visit an urgent care centre or emergency department.

Can children use Pharmacy First services?

Yes, children of all ages can use Pharmacy First services. For children under 16, a parent or guardian should accompany them for the consultation.
